Steve Jobs said “Abandon 1,000 great ideas to meet one big goal.”
Creating Smart Goals
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based.
Goal setting is helpful to fulfilling your purpose. By setting an objective roadmap on reaching goals can help you decide how to aply your time and resources. It also will indicate your progress. Without goals, it can be difficult to measure the how’s and what’s to obtain a certain milestone.
SMART Goals can help you develop a framework in which to create obtainable steps or increments in your journey to success.
First lets look at the acronym a little closer and define the SMART word.
S – Specific | Make you goals specific by asking the who, what, when, where, and why when planning.
Who are the people involved to accomplish the goal?
What tools, software or assets are needed to handle the goal?
Why am I setting this goal?
Where is my working location and/or virtual location?
Which resources are needed during the goal process?
M – Measurable | Track your goals with a measurable evidence that prove you met your goal.
Setup daily or weekly times to stop and reflect on goals accomplished. This will give you the evidence you need and a time for redirection if needed.
A - Attainable | Make sure your goals are achievable and not too outlandish.
Always consider if there are any road blocks which can hinder your scheduling.
Let’s not get grandiose here. Make sure your goal is attainable with a particular time frame.
R- Relevant | Make sure it is relevant to your goal, values and objectives.
Your time is valuable! All goals should align with the overall mission. If it doesn’t meet align with the mission, you may want to reconsider the goal which leads to the next letter.
T - Time-Sensitive | Set a realistic time frame. Prioritize your time to avoid distractions.
Because time is precious, you want to always be sensitive to how much is used on a specific goal. It’s important to stay focused with timelines in place before moving forward.
Now of course every goal has it’s own story. You’ll soon discover that while this is a blueprint, you can make adjustments along the way. No attainable goal has the same story. Create a spreadsheet with tasks, timelines and progress to help you along the way. Until next time, Have Power In You Purpose!
